St Martin’s Church Photographic Competition
run by Herne Bay Photographic Club
St Martin’s Church in Herne held the climax of its Photographic Competition, which has been run on behalf of the church by Herne Bay Photographic Club, on Sunday 3rd July.
All the entries were displayed as 6” x 4” prints on boards around the church, with finalists’ photos enlarged, mounted, and on show at the front. Award-winning photographer and writer, and Kent County Photographic Association judge, Malcolm Hardie chose the winners and presented prizes and certificates.
•The winner of the ‘9 and under’ age group was James. Emma, William/Dylan/Harry/Callum, and Kyle received highly commended.
•The winner of the ‘10-17’ age group was Tom. Highly commended went to Charlie, Thomas, and Eric.
•The winner of the ‘18 and over’ age group was Vanessa Moyes, with Neil Green and Lynda Martin receiving highly commended.
In the under 18 age groups, the winners both received a photo-related book suitable for their age. The winner of the over 18s age group won £25, plus one year’s free membership to Herne Bay Photographic Club (worth £35). In addition, all those in the final judging received a copy of their image mounted for display.
The Competition finale coincided with the anniversary of St Martin, so there was a party atmosphere that day. Local Herne brewer Goody Ales had created a special ale for the St Martin’s Restoration Project called “Good Samaritan” and this was also available.
The Photographic Competition, which Herne Bay Photographic Club held on behalf of St Martin’s, was open to entries throughout April and May. The event was one of the outreach projects St Martin’s created as part of its Restoration Project grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The public certainly rose to the challenge of going along and photographing the beautiful 13th century church, both inside and out, with more than 40 images in the “Over 18s” section, and nearly 150 across the children’s sections.
